BU Beginning of 2021: Sites and sounds | BU today
Boston University’s 148th inception on Sunday May 16 was one of the record books. Due to the ongoing pandemic and the need for social distancing, there have been two separate ceremonies, one for higher education graduates in the morning, the other for elderly graduates in the afternoon. Gone is the annual launch procession, and the thousands of family and friends cheering from the stands.
But it was still a festive occasion, helped by perfect spring weather. Noubar Afeyan, Co-Founder and President of Moderna, Inc., addressed members of the 2021 class gathered at Nickerson Field for the graduate diploma ceremony and those watching from afar during the livestream, and the rep. American Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) gave the launch keynote to senior graduates on the same field and watched remotely via livestream a few hours later. Preceding Pressley was this year’s student speaker, Archelle Thelemaque (COM’21).
And of course, there was the usual awarding of honorary degrees and the Metcalf Cup and Award and the Metcalf Awards for excellence in teaching.
Congratulations to each of the 6,898 members of the 2021 class.
