CM Bhagwant Mann opposes conversion of Panjab University into central university : The Tribune India

Chandigarh, June 19

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday called for the intervention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to prevent any change in the nature and character of Punjab University in Chandigarh.

“The state government vehemently opposes such a decision by the Indian government to examine the feasibility of converting Punjab University into a central university,” the chief minister wrote in a letter to Shah and Pradhan. .

The Chief Minister informed the two leaders that the state government will not appreciate any change in the nature and character of the university as it holds an emotional place in the hearts of the people of Punjab for historical, cultural reasons. and provincial.

He lamented that for some time some interest groups have been trying to shift the issue of changing the status of the University of the Punjab to a central university.

Mann reminded the two leaders that at the time of the reorganization of Punjab in 1966, Punjab University had been declared an ‘Inter State Body Corporate’ under Section 72(1) of the Act 1966 the reorganization of Punjab, enacted by Parliament.

The Chief Minister stated that this status has been duly confirmed in several court judgments. He added that since its inception, Punjab University has operated continuously and uninterrupted in Punjab.

Mann recalled that he was moved from Lahore, the then capital of Punjab, to Hoshiarpur and then to Chandigarh the present capital of Punjab, adding that at present, 175 colleges in Punjab located in the districts of Fazilka, Ferozepur , Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Moga, Sri Muktsar Sahib and SBS Nagar are affiliated with Punjab University.

The Chief Minister said that the University of Punjab is a symbol of Punjab’s heritage and is synonymous with the name of the state.
