Dangerous wind chills through Tuesday, some relief in the New Year
Temperatures will drop from -20 to -30 for the Hi-Line and, associated with a light north-northwest breeze, the wind chills will drop to 50 below zero for the Hi-Line and 40 below. zero for the rest of central Montana. If you have to travel tonight, be sure to pack an emergency kit that includes thick blankets and extra layers of clothing. Frostbite can form on exposed skin within 10 to 15 minutes in wind chill temperatures like these.
Sunday night: Brutally cold with ending flurries and mostly cloudy skies are expected. Overnight lows will drop from -10 near Helena to -30 in places on the Hi-Line.
Monday: The morning will start dangerously cold with little relief during the day. Maximums will range from 0 in the Helena region to -15 east of the Rockies. Partly cloudy skies are expected. Nighttime temperatures will start extremely cold around -5 to -15, but will slowly warm up as the winds move to the southwest. At daybreak, temperatures are around -5 to 5 degrees.
Tuesday: The high pressure keeps us dry and mostly sunny for most of the day. Slightly warmer temperatures forecast. The maximums will be 5 to 10 degrees. A weak disturbance moves during the night hours. Light snow will develop after lunchtime until Wednesday morning. General dusting to 2 inches throughout the area can be expected. Overnight lows drop to -5 to -15 degrees, with wind chills still as low as -30.
Wednesday: Mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. High temperatures of 0 to 10 degrees throughout the region. Overnight lows will drop to -5 to -15 degrees overnight. Clouds increase after dinner time.
Thusday: Milder temperatures, but still well below average. Temperatures high from low to mid-20s. Wind starts to pick up with gusts of up to 40mph allowing wind chills to stay in single digits and 10 throughout the day. Mostly cloudy skies and a few flurries possible in the Helena area. The overnight lows drop to 5 to -5 degrees Thursday evening.
New Year’s Eve: Partly cloudy sky. Possibility of flurries, especially in the Helena area. High temperatures will be single digits, dropping below freezing until the new year. Overnight lows will be -5 to -20 degrees. Wind chills as low as -35 possible for the Hi-Line and -25 for the rest of central Montana.
New Year’s Day: A warm front is moving north across the state during the morning hours, which will allow our temperatures to rise quite quickly in our teens and twenties. Mainly sunny to partly cloudy skies. Nighttime temperatures will drop in the upper and lower digits of 10.
Sunday: Temperatures will finally return to seasonal levels, with high temperatures on either side of 30 degrees. However, the winds are increasing again with wind gusts as high as 35 mph possible. Partly cloudy skies are expected.
