Edmonson County student completes high school with associate’s degree
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – SKYCTC held its graduation ceremony on Friday. Due to COVID-19, the graduation ceremony was different from the usual one. The students were given a time slot between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to cross the stage and receive their diplomas in front of their families.
“It’s just a very special time and this year of any year in higher education… these are all more powerful stories because of what these students went through in the last 12-14 months. Said SKYCTC President Phillip Neal.
SKYCTC graduated over 200 students on Friday, one of them is Alexas Engel. Engel graduated from high school with an associate’s degree.
“It’s not a daily occurrence because it takes a tremendous amount of work while you are going through high school and going to college,” Neal said. “This is something we’re definitely investing in to help these kids get a head start.”
In addition to schoolwork, Engel was also heavily involved in athletics throughout her high school career. She was one of the top archers and raced on track and cross country.
“I would come home after my practices, I would sit for a few hours, I would do my university studies, I would go to bed, I would wake up, I would go to school, the same thing all over again,” said Engel. She was also crowned Miss Kentucky Teen 2020.
Engel mentioned that staying on top of everything isn’t always easy, but she is grateful for the support system she had along the way. “I had several points for wanting to give up, especially this semester when COVID hit,” she said. “My mom was really successful and she helped me keep my things tidy.”
Engel also wanted to thank Ali Bechtold of SKYCTC for helping his classes graduate on time. She plans to attend WKU this fall with the intention of becoming a pediatric nurse. “I just knew I wanted to work directly with the kids,” Engel said.
Engel will also be graduating from Edmonson County High School later this month.
