Monday morning temperatures at Edmonton Blatchford station are -0.2°C with southerly winds of 4 km/h contributing to a wind chill of -1.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the city of Edmonton and surrounding areas, including most of central Alberta, bringing snow, freezing rain, high winds, blowing snow and falling rapid temperatures.

“Scattered freezing rain will continue this morning along the Yellowhead Corridor between Entwistle and Edmonton,” the warning read. “This area of ​​freezing rain will move east toward the Saskatchewan border and expand north and south throughout the day. Expect icy conditions along area highways including Highways 2, 16 and 43. Freezing rain will change to snow this afternoon.

The rapid drop in temperatures is of particular concern. Forecasters say we could see drops of 10 to 15 degrees in no time. We’ll go from waking up to temperatures hovering around the 0 C mark to falling asleep at a low of -21 C and wind chill near -32.

Avoid driving in Parkland County

An Alberta emergency alert was issued Monday morning warning people not to drive on roads and highways in Parkland County, citing potentially hazardous driving conditions.

“Do not drive on Parkland County roads at this time unless essential,” the warning reads. “Travel is discouraged on Interstates 16, 16A, 43, 44, 770 and 779.” “Emergency services and highway maintenance vehicles are present at many scenes throughout the county.”

Canceled school buses

As a result, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has canceled school bus service to all areas this morning.

“The families affected will be contacted directly. All EIPS schools remain open and classes will continue as planned,” EIPS said in a press release Monday morning.
