Gabriel and Turk receive pre-season Big 12 honors
NORMAN — University of Oklahoma Quarterback Dillon-Gabriel was chosen as Newcomer of the Year in the Big 12 Preseason and punter Michael Turkish was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Gabriel, a transfer from UCF, passed for 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns against 14 interceptions during his college career. He started 25 of 26 games in three UCF seasons, completing 60.7 percent of his passes and rushing for 372 yards and eight touchdowns. The Mililani, Hawaii product has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all 26 games, at least two touchdown passes in 20 games and at least four in seven outings. His 156.9 passing efficiency rating since the start of the 2019 season is the seventh best nationally among quarterbacks who have played each of the last three years (25 games minimum). He played three games last season before missing the rest of the campaign through injury.
Turk was a 2021 All-Big 12 first-team selection after averaging 51.2 yards on 35 punts. Twenty of his punts went at least 50 yards and eight at least 60, while 16 punts were down inside the 20-yard line. The Dallas, Texas product, who was traded from Arizona State last summer, has five of the best 14 single-game punting averages (minimum three punts) in Oklahoma history. The Big 12 Media Days takes place July 13-14 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Oklahoma will take their turn on Thursday, July 14 and will be represented by the head coach Brent VenablesGabriel, wide receiver Marvin Mimsdefensive side Ethan Downs and cornerback Woody Washington.
