Highlands University launches new business degrees
The Department of Business Administration at Highlands University announces three new degree programs: a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Health Care Administration, a Bachelor of Applied Science in General Business and a Bachelor of Arts in organizational leadership in public safety.
All three degrees are offered in an online, asynchronous eight-week modality to meet the growing need for professionals who wish to enhance their skills or move into leadership roles in the workplace.
The Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in healthcare administration launching in the spring semester of 2022. According to Dr. D. Veena Parboteeah, Dean of the School of Business, Media & Technology, offering this degree is a way for NMHU to meet the demand for New Mexico healthcare professionals.
Students will take courses from the general NMHU MBA catalog in addition to three health care specific courses that will give them the knowledge they need in health care administration. It is also possible to focus on the administration of health care in rural areas. The program is designed for anyone interested, including those already in the industry who are looking for promotion or a transition into administration.
The Bachelor of Applied Science in General Affairs (BAS) launched at NMHU in the fall of this year, and students in this track can tailor their courses to the type of profession they want to pursue. The Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership in Public Safety (BA) is set to officially launch in the spring of 2023, but there are already students enrolled in the program this fall.
Both programs are designed for students who have an associate’s degree or previous education or certifications relevant to their field of study, and they work well for community college transfer students who are used to accelerated learning. Additionally, distance learning students who prefer to interact with an instructor can do so at campus centers.
The Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership in Public Safety (BA) was specifically designed for public safety fields such as police and firefighters, and the previous training and certifications they hold from their jobs can count towards their minor towards the degree. And as with the BAS, students who complete the BA will have a wide range of upper-division coursework to choose from, including courses in leadership, public safety, and criminology.
“We’ve been approached by people in the public safety fields, and they specifically asked for this degree, so we got a lot of industry feedback to launch this degree,” Parboteeah said. “The BA is a collaboration between the Department of Business Administration, the Department of History and Political Science, and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice.”
The BA degree will help graduates move into a leadership role or in their organizations and will also prepare them to enter a graduate program such as the new Highlands University programme. Master of Arts in Criminology or the MBA program.
