HPU Women Drop non-conference final

The High Point University women’s basketball team closed the out-of-conference game at the West Palm Beach Invitational. The Panthers lost an 86-50 game to the Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday afternoon. Jaden Wrightsell led the Panthers with 11 points while Jenson edwards and Callie scheier scored seven points each. Nakyah Terrell removed seven cards for HPU.

The Eagles opened the game with a 9-0 streak, forcing a timeout for the Panthers. Jaden Wrightsell worked his way inside for a pair of lay-ups to lead HPU into the first quarter.

First-year student Nakyah Terrell closed the first quarter with a quick break layup, but HPU was still trailing 22-9 after a period.

Wrightsell continued to work on the offensive end, opening the second quarter with another layup and continued to push towards the basket, leading HPU with eight points in the half. Callie scheier entered the action with her first three-point shot of the day.

Cydney johnson got a key block and passed the ball to the ground at Terrell who capitalized on a float down the lane, but the FGCU continued to stifle the defense and used a 10-2 run late in the second period to take a 23 point lead at halftime.
HPU started the second half with straight three-point games from Wrightsell and Jenson edwards, both find lay-ups and convert to the free throw line. But FGCU would continue to slowly extend their lead, holding a 69-37 advantage with one period to go.

Both offenses slowed down in the fourth quarter, HPU’s only points in the first five minutes of the period came from a Scheier 15 foot jumper. Shakira Baskerville hit a layup under the basket with four minutes before Scheier capitalized on the open space and hit another deep jump shot.
