Johnson completes record-breaking NCAA regional championship season
COLLEGE STATION, TEX. – Roc Johnson capped a formidable 2021 outdoor track season for the Loyola Marymount University Lions when he crossed the finish line in the NCAA Preliminary Round 3,000m Steeplechase on Saturday. The meeting took place at EB Cushing Stadium, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
Johnson became the first Lion on the men’s team to compete for the NCAA in the 3,000m Steeplechase after his first-ever performance below 9:00 am at Azusa Pacific Last Chance Twilight earlier this month. His LMU record time of 8: 55.77, slashed his previous career record by 13 seconds and placed 36th out of a total of 48 qualifiers in the Western region.
Johnson had to wait an extra day to compete as inclement weather rescheduled the steeple from Friday night to Saturday afternoon.
Roc ran a brave race, finishing three places ahead of his initial standings despite falling just over two laps to go. He finished 33rd in total, crossing the line with a time of 9: 11.29.
Johnson’s career at LMU came to an end on Saturday afternoon, and he stepped away from bluffing as the school record holder in the 3,000m Steeple.
