Makuvire wins again, Lions finish third at Watson Invitational
CLINTON, miss – Three was the magic number for the University of Southeast Louisiana men’s cross country team as Bradley Makuvire won its third race in a row while the Lions finished third out of 23 teams on Saturday at the Watson Invitational at Choctaw Trails in Clinton hosted by Mississippi College.
Sophomore Makuvire is off to an incredible start with wins at the season opener LSU Invitational, Nicholls Invitational and Saturday’s 8k race.
“Bradley was extremely impressive today and the future remains bright for him,” said SLU cross country head coach. Corey Mistretta. “Overall I’m excited with the situation for both teams at this point in the training plan. I know they are all looking forward to continuing the work they can provide as we prepare for the Championship. the conference”
Makuvire, from Zvishavane, Zimbabwe, led the field of 175 riders on Saturday finishing in 23: 50.8, more than a minute ahead of the rest of the field. Southland’s two-time Athlete of the Week, however, remains humble despite his dominance at the start of the season.
“We always give thanks to Almighty God,” said Makuvire. “I also just had to believe in the work I’m doing. All thanks to Coach Clayton (SLU Distance Coach Clayton o’callaghan) to believe we can do it, Coach Mistretta for always pushing me to my limits and especially Coach Reneker (Matthew Reneker – Mississippi College Cross Country Head Coach) for welcoming us during the hurricane but above all, we still have a long way to go. “
SLU’s Noah Kipotrich and Julius Kemper also had strong performances with both finishing in the top 18. Kiptotrich placed 12e while Kemper finished 18e.
On the women’s side, the SLUs Berni Tournoux was the Lady Lions’ top finisher placing 33rd out of 163 runners in the 6 km race.
Saturday’s race marked the final tune-up as SLU heads to the Southland Conference Championships on Friday, October 29 in Corpus Christi, TX.
