Marquette drops 1-0 to Butler in BIG EAST opener
The Marquette University women’s soccer team (4-4-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) fell to the Butler Bulldogs (8-1-0, 1-0-0), 1-0 , during the BIG EAST opener on Thursday night at Valley Fields.
It was a level game for most of the regulation, with neither team generating many chances. Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, with the two teams combining for just six shots in the frame.
“Our goal this week was to be able to anticipate play on both ends of the pitch and I think we did a great job tonight,” said the head coach. Frank Pelaez noted. “Football can be a cruel game. Butler had a chance in the second half and he scored. I was extremely proud of the way we played each other tonight.”
It was the same in the second half, with each team struggling to generate quality opportunities.
But in the 90se minute, Butler got a free kick just outside the box on a MU handball. Aliya Diagne converted the attempt and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles have managed just six shots in the competition, with Alex Campana and Rachel johnson score shots on goal.
Butler also totaled six shots, with Diagne the only one to succeed. Bulldogs goaltender Emma Martin kept her clean sheet with two saves.
