MSU anthropology professor Dr Tim Hare publishes article on ancient Mayan living spaces

Dr Timothy Hare, associate professor of anthropology at Morehead State University, has published an article in a prestigious anthropology journal.
The article “A Space of One’s Own: Houselot Size Among the Ancient Maya” was published in the Journal of Anthropological Archeology. Using new lidar mapping data, he compares data on house lots in major cities and rural areas to explore how that data was an indicator of wealth and social status.

Hare published it with other anthropology professors from institutions across the country including Dr Scott R. Hutson (University of Kentucky), Dr Travis Stanton (University of California, Riverside), Dr Marilyn Masson (University of Albany), Dr. Nicolas Barth (University of California, Riverside), Dr. Traci Arde (University of Miami) and Dr. Aline Magnoni with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Hare’s extensive research resulted in detailed studies of the establishment and comparisons of the wealth, health, and household activities that characterized daily urban life in the post-classical Mayan capital of Mayapán (AD 1150-1450 ) in Yucatan, Mexico.

Hare has been with MSU since 2003. He received a BA in Anthropology in 1991 and an MA in Economic Anthropology in 1993, both from the University of Iowa, and a PhD. in Anthropology in 2001 from the University of Albany. Hare’s earlier work has also been published in Latin American Antiquity and Anthropos. He also recently co-authored a book titled “Settlement, Economy, and Society at Mayapán, Yucatan, Mexico” published by the Center for Comparative Archeology at the University of Pittsburgh.
