Ohio University Board of Trustees Appoints Dr. Hugh Sherman as President
The Ohio University Board of Trustees today appointed Dr. Hugh Sherman 22nd President of Ohio University for a two-year term effective June 14, 2021.
Prior to resigning in January 2021 with the intention of returning to the faculty, Dr Sherman served as Dean of the highly regarded College of Business. A professor of management, Dr Sherman began his career at Ohio University as an assistant faculty member in 1995.
Under Sherman’s leadership, the College of Business has consistently been ranked among the top 50 undergraduate public business colleges in the country, with a greater focus on student outcomes, including retention, professional skills, experiential education and work placements, which more than doubled the number of students enrolled.

The board intends to launch a search for the 23rd rector of the University in early fall 2022 with plans for a date starting no later than July 1, 2023.
From 2007 to 2021, Dr Sherman was Dean of the College of Business at Ohio University and the Corlett Chair in Strategy and Senior Economic Policy at the Voinovich School for Leadership & Public Affairs. As Dean, Dr. Sherman provided strategic vision and oversight of the college’s undergraduate and graduate programs, research, student recruitment, alumni relations, fundraising and relations with industry.

After a 22-year career in business, Sherman entered academia in 1995, first leading the MBA program at Ohio University as associate dean. He then rose to a number of critical leadership roles, including Chairman of the Department of Management Systems, Associate Dean of Operations and Strategy, Associate Director of the Voinovich School for Leadership and Public Affairs, and assistant to the dean of the university for strategic planning. He is currently a Senior Fellow at Voinovich School, providing strategic oversight of economic development and leadership programs.
He started his professional career with Swatch Watch (formerly SMH Corporation), a large Swiss manufacturer of watches and electronics in 1974. He served as Vice President of Marketing until 1986 and during that time was responsible for the development and implementation of marketing strategies for an amount of $ 50 million. as well as assisting the president of the North American group in the development of strategic marketing and operating plans in the United States. While in the private sector, he also served as a consultant and founded International Footwear, operating eight factory shoe stores on the east coast of the United States.
Sherman and his wife, Cynthia (better known as Nikki), are active members of the community of Athens and the greater region of Southeast Ohio. scholarship for Appalachian students. Dr. Sherman also volunteers with various community organizations in the State of Ohio. He currently serves on the boards of Tech Growth and the Ohio University Inn.
Dr Sherman holds a BA in Economics and Finance from Guelph University (Canada), an MBA from Northeastern University and a PhD. in Strategic Management and International Business from Temple University. His research interests include corporate governance, international business, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
As announced to the university community On May 13, 2021, the 21st President of the University, Dr. M. Duane Nellis, will move to a professorship at Ohio University effective July 1, 2021.
