Familiar face, new role
With the cancellation of the 2020 season, the head coach Jerry mcconnell won his first win at the helm on September 25 at Mansfield. McConnell has spent the past 12 seasons on staff as the offensive coordinator. In his 12 years as a member of the coaching staff, the Quakers have seen 112 offensive players receive All-CSFL caps, with 40 of those players receiving first-team honors. In McConnell’s 12 years, Penn led the CSFL in all-out offense on four occasions (2009, ’13, ’17, ’19).
The Quakers come out of a goodbye, entering the game well rested. Last time, Penn passed Mansfield, 55-28. Junior QB André Paolini passed for 270 yards and four touchdowns and senior RB Laquan McKever ran for 152 yards and three scores to lead the Red and Blue past the Mounties. Quakers racked up over 500 total attacking yards and forced three turnovers in the win
Following the victory over Mansfield, two members of the University of Pennsylvania sprint soccer team won weekly Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) awards. André Paolini was named CSFL Offensive Player of the Week and LB Rookie Jake inserra was named CSFL Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Let it rip
Paolini had a career day under center against the Mounties, passing for 270 yards and four touchdowns. He had 12 of 21 assists that day and he connected on 15, 34, 34 and 57 yard touchdown passes. He also ran for six yards. The Cherry Hill, NJ native set new career records in passing yards, completed passes and touchdowns.
Make a carnage
Inserra was all over the field for the Quakers’ victory over Mansfield two weeks ago. He had a career-high 16 tackles, highlighted by 10 solo saves. It represented 0.5 TFL. He currently leads the CSFL in tackles per game (13.5).
Senior WR Brendan McCaffrey is impressive in the team’s first two games of the year. He caught eight passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns. He leads the CSFL in yards per game (177), touchdowns (4) and yards per catch (44.3).
History of the series with Cornell
The Quakers and Big Red play for the 101st time with Cornell holding a 57-43 advantage. Penn had the advantage of winning the last seven games between the two late. Dating back to 2010, the Rouge et Bleu have won nine of the last ten games against Cornell. The Big Red’s last victory at Franklin Field dates back to October 2009.

As a trainer Bill wagnerIn the last Ivy League game against Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania sprint soccer team dominated the Big Red with a 61-7 victory at Ithaca. Penn’s 61 points are the most points scored since a 69-6 win over Caldwell in 2017. The Quakers gained 502 total yards thanks to an offensive scrum. This is the highest total since Penn’s season opener win over Mansfield in 2018. Nine of Penn’s 13 discs resulted in a touchdown, including the Quakers’ first seven discs.
