University of Hawaii junior Andre Ilagan advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over TCU’s Juan Carlos Aguilar on Thursday in Tulsa, Okla. .
Ilagan won three qualifying games earlier this week and became the first Rainbow Warrior to win a tournament main draw with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Georgia Tech’s Marcus McDaniel on Wednesday. The Farrington graduate will face Connor Kingsley of Ohio State today for a place in the quarterfinals.
UH football team binds UC Riverside
Shots on goal counted as Hawaii and UC Riverside tied 1-1 in a Big West women’s football game on Thursday in Riverside, Calif.
UH goalie Lauren Marquez made five saves, including a penalty save in the last minute of regulation, and Rainbow Wahine (0-7-3, 0-3-2 Big West) had their second draw right now. UC Riverside’s Caela Kaio, a Kamehameha alumnus, made six saves for the Highlanders (3-7-3, 0-3-2).
Wahine senior Maki Kono put the Wahines ahead with the first goal of his UH career in the 31st minute. UC Riverside got a penalty around four minutes later and Kailua-Kona’s Akari Shimizu converted for the Highlanders to tie the game.
UC Riverside took another penalty in the last minute of regulation, but Marquez made the save to force extra time and the teams went scoreless in two 10-minute periods. UH’s Kayla Ryan took a shot off the crossbar in second overtime.
UH wraps up its road trip Sunday at Cal State Fullerton.
