Virginia Tech footballer Isi Etute charged with second degree murder
BLACKSBURG, Virginia – A Virginia Tech soccer player from Hampton Roads was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with the death of a Blacksburg resident.
Virginia Tech officials said Isimemen Etute, originally from Virginia Beach, was a freshman at the school. WTKR reported that he attended Cox High School.
Etute has been charged with second degree murder.
Blacksburg Police identified the victim as Jerry Smith, 40, of Blacksburg; his death was ruled as a homicide. They say he and Etute knew each other.
The university said that if arrested for a felony, it had the power to put a student on immediate provisional suspension.
Etute has been suspended from the team with immediate effect.
Blacksburg Police continue to conduct this ongoing investigation, and university officials say they will help law enforcement deal with the case.
“The communities of Virginia Tech and the City of Blacksburg are united in our common concern for the well-being of all. Together we speak out against all acts of violence and we support each other,” the university said in a statement.
