WFF: The Braves pass Cottey, 60-0

OTTAWA, Kansas – The uOttawa women’s flag football team opened the 2022 season with a 60-0 victory over Cottey College on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field.
Ottawa received the ball to start the game and seven plays later, Madysen Carrera threw the ball four yards at the quarterback keeper. Carrera’s extra pass to Clara Beaudoin was good and with eight minutes on the clock, Ottawa led 7-0.
The OU defense forced a three-and-out by the Comet offense, returning the ball to Ottawa at the CU 29-yard line. Two plays later, Carrera threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Bailey Hodgins. Carrera ran the ball for the extra point and Ottawa extended their lead to 14-0.
The OU defense forced its second consecutive punt by the Comets and Ottawa took over on the CC 19-yard line. Ottawa found the end zone again, this time on a Carrera lateral to Addison Osborn. Alyssa Linkous converted the extra point and with 2:09 left in the first quarter, OU led 21-0.
Cottey had his best drive of the half on his third offensive possession of the game. The Comets moved the ball to their own 36-yard line. The OU defense, however, walked away with the takeaway. In fourth and seventh place, Abby Brown got in front of CC’s Emily Kane pass and intercepted the ball. She returned it to the 19-yard Comet line.
Two plays later, Carrera threw the ball nine yards for the touchdown. Jazlyn Camacho converted the extra point and Ottawa led 28-0 with 8:14 left in the first half.
The Braves forced another punt from Cottey, taking over on the 25-yard line from Comet. Sidney Rood threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Osborn, giving the Braves a 34-0 lead with 4:30 left in the second quarter.
Ottawa’s defense held Cottey in check on the Comets’ next offensive possession, taking over on the CC’s nine-yard line. Rood capped the four-game series with a touchdown pass to Carrera and Ottawa took a 40-0 locker room lead.
Ottawa’s defense continued to pressure Cottey’s offense in the second half. Only one play to start the third quarter by the Comets and Ottawa had the interception. Faron Malouff recorded his first career interception and the Brave offense took over at Comet’s 25-yard line.
Three plays later, Carrera scored on the quarterback keeper. She also converted the extra point, giving OU a 47-0 lead with 9:33 left in the third quarter.
The Comets moved the ball on their second offensive possession of the second half, but the player stalled on the OU 32-yard line. Cottey went for it in fourth and 12th. Brown tackled the ball carrier three yards on the first down and the Brave offense got the better of the downs.
It didn’t take OU long to find the end zone. Rood threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Osborn. Beaudoin converted the extra point and Ottawa led 54-0.
The Brave defense forced another turnover on tries, giving Ottawa’s offense the ball at Cottey’s 14-yard line. OU took advantage of the excellent position on the field, scoring on a pass from Rood to Linkous and Ottawa took the 60-0 victory.
Inside the box
- The Braves finished the game with 253 rushing yards, 171 passing yards and 82 rushing yards. The OU defense held Cottey to 79 rushing yards, 34 rushing yards and 45 passing yards.
- Madysen Carrera led OU in rushing with 55 yards. She was also 7 for 9 through the air for 94 yards and a touchdown.
- Sidney Root went 9 for 11 through the air for 77 yards and four touchdowns.
- Jazlyn Camacho led the Braves with four receptions.
- Alyssa Linkous had 51 receiving yards.
- Addison Osborn had a rushing touchdown and two receiving touchdowns.
- Abby Brown led OU with eight tackles and a sack.
- Hannah Serquina was right behind her with seven tackles and a sack.
Ottawa (1-0, 1-0) will host Midland University on Saturday, Feb. 26 at AdventHealth Field. The game is due to start at 1:00 p.m.
